SOCIAL MEDIA PRACTICES: EXTENT OF RESPONSIBLE UTILIZATION

This research described the social media use of youth, as represented by Senior High School graduates who were first-year College students when this study was conducted. It specifically determined the profile of the respondents, the extent of their responsible use of social media, and the relationship between the profile, preparation for, and responsible use. Three hundred fifty students from public and private senior high schools were randomly chosen to participate in the study. The researchers used weighted means and Pearson’s r for data analysis. Findings revealed that, to a great extent, respondents practice responsible use of social media by handling social media content, practicing self-regulation, and considering risks. As regards correlation, it was found that age affects self-regulation; the number of social networking sites is related to the influences considered, handling social media content, self-regulation, and risk consideration. On the other hand, the hours respondents spend on social networking sites (SNS) daily affect their handling of social media content. In conclusion, the respondents exhibit responsible utilization of social media to a great extent.
