Protect the Potato Cyst Nematode and Bacterial Wilt-free Seed Potato Production Areas

Out of the 30.1 hectares surveyed from the major potato growing areas in Benguet and Mountain Province, 11.2 hectares are suitable for seed production where only 1.21 hectares are free of the dreaded diseases, namely: bacterial wilt (kuyos) and potato cyst nematode. The remaining areas (17.69 has) are highly infected with bacterial wilt and potato cyst nematode and are only good for table potato production. The recent and previous consolidated surveys done by the Department of Agriculture (DA), Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) and Benguet State University (BSU) are eminent evidence that the spread of the diseases is inevitable affecting potato productivity and the industry as a whole. Hence, potato field health and productivity preservation is crucial.
