Night Markets in the Philippines: Between Precarity and Inclusivity: A Public Forum

This paper documents the proceedings of a public forum titled “Night Markets in the Philippines: Between Precarity and Inclusivity,” which examines the socio-economic dynamics of nocturnal informal economies in Philippine urban centers. The study explores the dual nature of night markets as both vital sites for grassroots entrepreneurship and spaces of high economic vulnerability for vendors. Key discussions center on the regulatory challenges faced by local government units, the impact of urban redevelopment on informal livelihoods, and the potential for night markets to serve as inclusive spaces for social integration and tourism. By synthesizing insights from urban planners, sociologists, and local practitioners, the proceedings advocate for policy frameworks that move beyond mere regulation toward the institutional protection and empowerment of informal workers. Ultimately, the research highlights the need for "right to the city" approaches that recognize night markets as essential components of a vibrant, equitable, and resilient urban landscape.
