Integration of Heritage Conservation Policies in Local Planning: The Case of Quezon City


Conserving historical landmarks, structures and objects is an enormous task. It entails sets of rules and regulations to ensure that these important reminders of history are taken cared of for the future generations, the national government has provided a set of laws that encourages the conservation of heritage. Local government units are also encouraged to include the heritage conservation in their local plans and programs.
This study looked into and examined the integration of heritage conservation to local planning policies and practices of Quezon City. Aside from being an additional body of knowledge on heritage conservation this study aims to put heritage conservation into the mainstream of local planning focusing on Quezon City as the study area.
Quezon City, having a wealth of heritage, has taken initial steps to conserve its heritage with the creation and organization of a Tourism Affairs Office and a proposed Heritage five (5) sites under the level I category and twenty-six (26) sites marked as level II. National Cultural Treasures declared by the National Museum are also found in the city. With the leadership of the Major and Vice Major, the city undertook the conservation of the Quezon Heritage House and the beautification and maintenance of the Pugad Lawin and Tandang Sora Shrines.
Heritage conservation has been considered by the international organization as an important driver of the economy.
