Influences of Self-Efficacy and Motivation on Academic Burnout: A Predictive Study

As future professionals in the healthcare industry, especially in the times of the Covid-19 pandemic, Filipino nursing students face the challenge of developing their academic competence while adjusting to the modifications to their learning. With this, identifying helpful psychological resources is relevant in preventing academic burnout. Adopting a predictive correlational design, the researchers selected 111 nursing students from a private university in the Philippines through stratified random sampling. Using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis, the predictive relationship between self-efficacy and motivation and academic burnout was investigated. The study yielded the following results: (a) the respondents have above-average levels of self-efficacy and motivation, while the majority reported low levels of academic burnout; (b) most dimensions of the academic self-efficacy, motivation, and burnout scales displayed high weighted means; and (c) the predictors exhibited weak to moderate correlations, accounting for 29% of the variances in academic burnout. Recommendations on intervention programmes and academic support to mitigate the effects of burnout on students were provided.
