Hyphenate Woman: Pacita Abad Stitching Solidarity—A Review of Pacita Abad's Retrospective at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

In 2023, the late Filipino-American artist Pacita Abad's first retrospective of her works was finally exhibited in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Many saw this as a homecoming for her as it was written in the exhibition catalog that San Francisco was the site where Abad flourished as a politically active artist. This review courses through her works and argues that Abad’s position as a mobile, diasporic Filipino has situated many "homes" not as location but as operations of veering away from strife. The writer calls Abad a "hyphenate woman" whose body and bodies of work serve to link and course through different situations and struggle as a means of solidarity.
