The Webinar on Disaster Resilience in Informal Settlements aims to raise awareness, deepen understanding, and shed light on, among Environmental Planners and related professionals, the severe problem of strategic risk reduction under conditions of urban poverty and informal urban development. It also aims to mainstream risk reduction measures (upgrading and retreat) in hazard prone areas with particular focus on informal settlements, despite the absence or ineffectiveness of formal planning mechanisms. Lastly, it recommends sustainable and socially acceptable solutions to the widespread problem of informal settler families living in endangered areas, and to strengthen the capacity of local and regional actors to properly address these planning problems.
